BRITISH TRANSPLANT GAMES

 The countdown is on...

It is just over 11 weeks until the British Transplant Games kick off in Liverpool.Launched in 1978 the games have been hosted annually in cities across the UK. The Transplant games demonstrate the benefits of transplantation and encourage those who have had a transplant to regain their fitness. The games also aim to increase public awareness for more people to join the NHS Organ Donor Register and discuss their wishes with their family.

THE KIDNEY KIDS SCOTLAND TEAM

Each year Kidney Kids Scotland supports a team to take part in the games.  These incredibly brave children have lived on a daily basis with hospital appointments and medical treatment. Having had a transplant they can live a much fuller life - taking part in sports just like other children. Competing in the Games is a chance for our youngsters to show that their condition is no barrier to achievement.

Over the years we have received fantastic support from organisations who support the team by sponsoring the kit or making a donation towards the cost of accommodation or transport. If your organisation would like to help support the Kidney Kids team then please give us a call or drop us a line.

The 'Big Kid' Weekend

We are still on a bit of a high after the success of the Kidney Kids 'Big Kid' weekend.  The weekend was a chance for our older children to get together and bond over archery, paintball, water balloons, pizzas and mocktails.

We were very lucky to have Kate, Omid and Rebecca come along to share their stories with the group. Hearing from peers who have been through dialysis and transplant is so incredibly valuable to those who may be facing a similar journey.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody who helped make it happen:

Firstly Kate, Rebecca and Omid for sharing their stories and inspiring children on a similar journey.

We would also like to thank Cumbernauld Outdoor Centre who have always been great supporters of Kidney Kids Scotland.

Next we would like to thank the Westerwood Hotel who have once again done a great job in making our event go smoothly. A special thanks goes to Chef who ran the pizza making session and of course who could forget the mocktails - thanks to Scott for showing the kids how it's done.

Without Bryan's coaches and Willie the driver, we would not have got very far, so a big thanks to them.

We would also like to extend a special thank you to Deepa, Diane,Jackie, Bernie and Michael for their support and last but by no means least we want to thank all of the families who came along, without whom the day would not have been possible.

New Counselling Service

We are delighted to introduce you to Rebecca Hemingway who will be offering a free counselling service to parent of Kidney Kids.  Who better to tell you all about this than Rebecca herself:

"My name is Rebecca Hemingway and I am the parent of a teenager who has suffered from a chronic renal condition (Nephrotic Syndrome) since he was 3 years old. Although my son is much better now, I understand how extremely stressful and emotionally challenging it can be for any parent of a child with a long term medical condition.

As a trained counsellor and also as a mum of a child with a renal condition I am offering my services to anyone who feels they need someone to talk to. This may take the form of an informal chat or a number of more structured sessions, I am totally flexible and am happy to provide a service which best meets your needs. I am happy to meet for 1:1 sessions at the Kidney Kids office in Larbert or we can chat over the phone if that is easier.

I am a qualified Counsellor, Hypnotherapist and Mindfulness Practitioner and as such am a member of a number of Professional organisations so you can be assured that I follow a strict code of ethics and all sessions will be confidential. I have known Kidney Kids for over 10 years now and have participated in a number of family weekends and parent/family groups and I am aware of the difficulties many families face when caring for a sick child, and also how sometimes there is a need to talk to someone about how you are feeling. If you would like to use my services, or simply want to find out more then please email the Kidney Kids Office for a suitable time to be arranged:

Email: office@kidneykids.org.uk

Telephone: 01324 555843

I look forward to hearing from you"

THANKS FOR ALL OF YOUR SUPPORT ON

WORLD KIDNEY DAY

Last week the Kidney Kids girls took Falkirk and Stirling by storm for World Kidney Day.  Dressed from head to toe in blue and yellow we visited over 30 local companies who were supporting Kidney Kids Scotland on this special day.

We had a ball and would like to thank all of the businesses and individuals who worked hard to support the charity on World Kidney Day.  It was great to see all of your hard work in action.

World Kidney day is a global initiative bringing together millions of people over 150 countries to raise awareness of kidney health. 2016 was the 11th World Kidney Day and Kidney Kids Scotland were delighted to welcome more people on board than ever before to help raise awareness and money on this day.

Around 600 million people worldwide have some form of kidney damage, yet awareness of kidney disease is still very low.  World Kidney Day works hard to change this.
