Family Weekend & The "Big" Kidney Kid Weekend

FAMILY WEEKEND

For the past eleven years Kidney Kids Scotland have held a "Family Weekend". This is a chance for parents to find out more about their child's illness and is the ideal opportunity for "family time". Consultants, Doctors, Nurses and many other professional people give up their time to come along to the weekend and this has proved to be highly successful both from the medical and from the family point of view.

The 2022 Family Weekend was a huge success. It was so lovely to finally welcome our families after such difficult time for so many through the pandemic.  Held at the Westerwood Hotel in Cumbernauld and supported by BBC Children in Need we welcomed 28 families. The families all gained so much from the weekend including a lot of learning and support our families this year enjoyed a host of entertainment to keep kids small and large happy, including a golf lesson from the wonderful staff at Westerwood, our amazing magician Magic Pete, a fantastic creche provided by Tinies finished with a family disco!

AND FOR THE BIG KIDS!

2016 saw the first of our "Big" Kidney Kid Weekend. We have found that teenage children who are either waiting for a transplant or  have had a successful transplant face numerous life challenges.  Something as simple as overindulging in alcohol on a night out could be enough to cause transpant rejection and force them back into dialysis.

We held an overnight team building event with numerous activities including pizza making and a mocktail masterclass. The group included young adults who have learned how their actions can affect their kidneys the hard way!  They were willing to share their expereinces to help others along their journey and to show them how to combat some of the challenges they face.
